A win! Outstanding Pastel in Bold Brush Painting Competition

It never hurts to get a "thumbs up" for one's art, right?  The Bold Brush Painting Competition for September sponsored by FASO is the first national contest I have entered...ever.  And what do you know?  The painting "Sweet Escape"(above) was chosen in the category of "Outstanding Pastel" which made for a nice day.  Thanks, FASO.

I can't believe this is pastel, it is amazing. Any chance you could show some step by step demos of your technique with pastel or oil?

Courtney, you made my day! Thank you for your comment. I have just recently started another tab right next to the HOME tab at the top. It is called WORKS IN PROGRESS and I plan to update it with both oil and pastel demos. If I can figure out how to do it, I might try video too! Thanks again for your nice words.

Hi Lisa..your work is unbelievable..
:)
Need your advice on how to preserve pastels.
When I use a fixative it tends to darken my painting and the texture become rough. So the overall originality of it is gone.
Please help!

Hi Niharika,
Thank you for your compliment. I do not use a fixative for two reasons. First, I agree with you that is often damages the look of the artwork by making it darker and adding texture. If you lose the "tooth" or the texture of the paper because of too many layers of pastel then fixative might be helpful but otherwise I do not recommend it. Secondly, I have noticed on older paintings that have been sprayed, there is a discoloration. I know the cans say that the fixative won't cause yellowing and maybe that is true, but I have noticed a difference. I think the key to success is to find a really good paper. That is why I like UArt Sanded Pastel Paper a lot. There are other good brands too. I hope that helps. Feel free to email me if you have more questions. Thanks again for the nice compliments!
